Outdoor Yucca (Adam's Needle) turned yellow over winter in Ontario

(Peterborough, ON Canada)

My Yucca plant seems to have no new growth yet this spring (it is May now). Should I prune it? When should I expect to see new growth?

I have Adam's Needle planted in 2007 (zone 5a Ont.) and it bloomed that summer but not in 2008. I have not pruned it since it was planted. Should it be pruned every year? It gets about 6 hrs. sunshine a day. Anything special to be done to get bloom this year?

Your Yucca Plant

Kimberly here for landscape-solutions-for-you. Thank you for asking the question on your Yucca Plant.

The leaves turning yellow over the winter can result from a couple of different things. One is harsh cold temperatures, too much snow and rain, or not enough moisture to the plant.

In your geographic location it would be alright to prune the Yucca back. I would go ahead and prune back making sure you cut at an angle. When you prune you can also take a shovel and loosen the dirt around the plant and add some organic mushroom compost. This is an organic fertilizer that will last up to one year. This will help new growth develop on your plant. Make sure you properly water, and the Yucca should start producing new growth.
