Over watered the Stella cherry tree...what to do now

I recently bought a Stella cherry tree and planted it in my backyard in the corner. After some weeks I started noticing the yellow leaves and the the foliage just started falling off... I checked your web site and well got to know that I was in fact over watering the tree...so I dug up the soil around it and found the tree sitting in all that water. The soil around the roots was so dense that the water never seeped out.

Now I am in a fix as to what to do . The tree is still alive because when I scratched the bark it's still green from the inside. Can you please advice me as to what I should do to keep my tree in a good state now.
Do I need to dig it up and replant it...What should I do to the roots that have most probably rotted?

Thanks

Saba

Over watered Stella Cherry Tree
by: kimberly

Hi Saba, Kimberly here from landscape-solutions-for-you. Thank you for asking the question on your over watered Stella Cherry tree.

It does in fact sound like it was over watered with how you described the root system. With the tree still be alive, I would transplant the tree. The main objective to having the tree survive is when you dig the tree out, check for the tap or mother root. This will be the biggest root. If the tap root is in tack, you should be fine. Check all the root sytem, and trim off the dead roots, as long as it isn't the tap or main roots.

Prepare your new hole ahead of time. I recommend to add some organic mushroom compost to the soil. The mushroom compost as an organic fertilizer that will last up to one year. Make sure the hole is dug in an area where the water will not collect. Once in ground, take hose and let the water trickle around the tree. As you have learned, (many of us have over watered from time to time) develop a watering schedule that will work for the Stella Cherry tree.

If you prepare the hole properly, make sure the tap root is in tack, and water properly, due to when you planted the tree, your Stella Cherry tree should do fine.

The best of luck to you and keep us updated on how the tree is doing. Thanks again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Feel free to ask anytime and have a great day!
Kimberly
