Planting Trees around Pomegranate Trees - Pros and Cons

by Khemchandra Birhade
(Nashik, Maharashtra, India)

Dear Sir,

Could you throw some light on as to whether we can grow some trees around the Pomegranate plantation or not? It is said that there are some trees which help to reduce the bacteria or the insects that cause harm to the pomegranate trees.

One of the farmer told me that there is an Indian herb plant called "TULSI", which attract the males insects that create havoc for pomegranate tree leaves by eating it. It is said that when these male is attracted by the TULSI Plant, it's reproduction organs become impotent hence they cannot bread to populate any more insects hence the leaves of pomegranate are saved ... and the yield of fruits is protected this way ... please explain are there such type of plants like TULSI which save the main fruit orchard trees' or is this a myth?

While thanking you, I await your advice..

Khemchandra Birhade

Planting Trees Around Pomegranate Trees

Hi Khemchandra, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on planting trees around your Pomegranate trees.

I apologize for the delay in responding. Have been without power for over 16 hours.

Tulsi, is a very popular herb and special herb to India, as you know. It can have benefits to humans and is known to have anti-bacteria ingredients that may benefit plants.

Pomegranates do need some space to properly grow to their maturity. There is no reason no to plant other trees, herbs, flowers, and shrubs in a plantation of Pomegranates. Make sure everything is spaced properly.

Tulsi is a member of the basil family and is pretty safe around all kinds of plant specimens. You should be fine.

Thanks again for asking the question and feel free to ask anytime.
Kimberly
