poor downspout location

by Shelley Vopava
(New Brighton, MN)

The drainage design of our home is poor. The downspout from the roof empties right into the front flower bed on the left side that is surrounded by house and cement walk on 3 sides. The right side has a 3 foot wide roof edge that empties right into the flower bed. We are trying rain barrels currently but don't care for the look. Any ideas?

Install a drain line under the sidewalk
by: Jim

Hi Shelley, Jim here from www.rain-gutter-guide.com, You may have this condition repaired by know but if you don't, Think about this. We always try not to install a downspout in a location like that but if we have to, (1) we will dig a trench from the downspout to the sidewalk, (2) drill under the sidewalk with our 4 inch auger bit, (3) trench out from the sidewalk into the yard to a point where you will release the water. (4) lay 4 inch solid drain pipe in the ground, under the sidewalk and up to the downspout (5) Connect the downspout to the pipe with a 4 inch elbow and a black downspout adapter.(6) connect a 4 inch pop up emitter to the other end. The pop up emitter will allow he water to drain out while it is raining, then close up when it stops. Before we bought the 4 inch drill, we just dug under the sidewalks with narrow shovels. Hope this helps

drainpipe
by: Shelley

Ya, we thought of the drainpipe. If we do that, it would have to go right across the top of the walk. Burying it would only add to the wet near the house. But hey, thanks!

Poor Downspout Location
by: Kimberly

Hi Shelley, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your drainage problem in your front flower beds.

The goal is to carry the water away from the area. I would recommend a four inch plastic flexible drain pipe. There are adapters available to insert into the downspout, to convert to the drain pipe. An option is to bury the drain pipe, as it may be unattractive. Make sure the pipe drains away from the flower bed and house. You can purchase the drain pipe and adapter at most chain stores or speciality landscape and some garden centers.

I hope this has helped, and the best of luck to you with your drainage problem. I have had to help clients with this problem, as well as at my own home. Let us know how you make out. Thanks again for asking the question Shelley, and feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day!
Kimberly
