Privacy 'fence'

Hi,
I'm looking to create a privacy fence out of natural plants/shrubs. The area is only about 10 feet wide and I would like something with prickers on it to keep people out. I live in NJ near the coast so the soil is fairly sandy. The area is partial shade and some sun. I was thinking of using Arborvitaes and some Indian Hawthorn but wasn't sure if the Hawthorn had prickers on it. Any suggestions would be great!

Privacy Fence In New Jersey Coast
by: Kimberly

Hi Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on planting trees or shrubs to create a privacy fence in your location.

A few come to mind when you mention you have sandy soil.

1. Emerald Green Arborvitae
2. Black Dragon Cryptomeria
3. Clyera
4. False Cypress
5. Arizona Cypress - Carolina Sapphire
6. Hollies - Nellie Stevens is a good one

All of these are evergreens and would create a great privacy fence. Another option you can do besides one row, is to considered a back drop of taller trees and if you have room, plant some shorter shrubs in front of them. The result is total privacy.

Shorter shrubs you can use -

1. Indian Hawthorn - the Hawthorn doesn't have prickers
2. Loropetalum or Chinese Pizazz
3. Mop Cypress
4. Variegated Boxwood
5. Hinoki Cypress

All of these are evergreens too. I hope this has given you some suggestions. All of these trees and shrubs will do well along the New Jersery coast. Let us know what you decide and thanks again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day!
Kimberly
