I also have a evergreen that needs pruning . it grows abut 4 ft but is too wide and covers sidewalk.

Pruning Shrubs
by: Kimberly

Hi, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on pruning your shrubs. From your description it sounds as though your first shrub you talked about may be a Barberry. You can go ahead an prune it back now as there will be new growth appearing. Always prune each branch at an angle. It would be alright to prune back enough away from the sidewalk.

You can prune back the evergreen shrub as well away from the side walk. I recommend to start from the bottom, work around the plant, and finish at the top.

If you live in a warmer climate where new growth has already taken place, don't do a mass pruning, just enough to take the shrubs away from the sidewalk.

I hope this has answered your questions and feel free any time to ask a question here at landscape solutions for you. Below is a link to the properly pruning page. Have a great day.
Kimberly
