Raised bed around an evergreen

by Gabby
(Anniston, AL)

I have built a bed around some sort or evergreen in my front yard. The bed itself is roughly 6 x 6. The trunk of the tree is maybe 1 to 1 1/2 feet in diameter. The bed is around 1 foot tall. I've had people tell me to get the dirt away from the trunk of the tree, and I've had people tell me to remove the bed completely. What should I do?

Raised bed around an evergreen
by: Kimberly

Hi Gabby, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your raised bed. This is a very good question and one that others have had to deal with.

You can keep your raised bed, but make sure you pull the dirt away from the trunk of the tree. Your tree sounds like it is established, and it will be fine as long as the dirt is away from the tree. This is true of mulch or pine straw also.

As far as your raised bed, you can add some smaller evergreen shade shrubs or shade flowers to the tree. If you have some sun that comes through, you can do some part sun and part shade shrubs.

I have designed many raised beds and as long as the dirt is pulled away from the evergreen, you will be fine.

The shrubs or flowers will add to your defined bed. I recommend putting in some organic mushroom compost with your dirt. This is an organic fertilizer that will last up to one year.

Camellia is a great choice, as well as a Pieris Japonica for the bed. You can also decorate your raised bed with a few small outdoor features.

I hope this helps and the best of luck to you. Thanks again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Feel free to ask anytime and have a great day!
Kimberly
