by charlotte Elder
(nebraska)

one bed is contained and needs top soil. The other is not contained and I want to add topsoil but do not want to lose a lot out onto the lawn with rain and do want it to be a very labor saving method.

Top Soil In Beds
by: Kimberly

Hi Charlotte, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on top soil in your two different landscape beds.

There are two methods when applying top soil to a bed. One is to mix it into the soil, and the other is to make a raised bed by using more top soil. Even if making a raised bed, the bottom layer of the top soil should be mixed into the ground soil.

I am not sure how big your beds are, but you can either buy top soil in bags, or have it delivered by a nursery or garden center. Make sure the top soil is of good quality. No bark in it. I recommend a light weight top soil.

My crew and I in past jobs have had to do both types of beds you are doing. In your undefined bed, one of the problems you run into with a flat surface is the top soil running out onto your lawn. I would recommend some type of edging to put along the bed, or digging a small trench. I know you are trying to do the easiest method. Your goal is to have the top soil stay in the bed, and a small trench or edging will take care of this. There are many different styles of edging available today. Rocks will also hold the top soil in place and creates a natural finished look. If you have any rocks around your property,
this is a good solution.

An option for you is to think about hiring someone to do the trench. Time wise it shouldn't take long, so cost is down.

I hope this has helped some and if you need further suggestions, please feel free to let us know. Thank you for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Have a great day.
Kimberly
