roots growing into septic lines

I need a plant that I can plant near my septic tank, that does not have a deep root system. I live in North Carolina and I have black rich dirt. I also have a wind problem so what ever is suggested it must be able to handle the wind.

Planting near a septic tank
by: Kimberly

Hi, this is Kimberly from landscape-solutions-for-you.

Thank you for asking the question on a plant that can be put near your septic tank.

There are a couple of thoughts that come to mind. A general rule of thumb when trying to figure out the root depth of any plant specimen, is to think about the width of your branches on the plant. If a shrub matures to eight to ten feet wide, generally the root system will be around eight to ten feet deep.

I recommend to my clients if possible to bring in some top soil in the area they will be planting. Consider making a small defined bed, so you could plant three to five shrubs or acouple of small trees. This will enhance the beuaty of your property. It sounds like you have good soil. Here are a couple of suggestions for you. Of course this will depend if the plant or plants will be in full sun.

1. Loropetalum - evergreen
2. Cleyera - evergreen
3. Add some small shrubs with these two, such as Indian Hawhorn, Mop or Hinoki Cypress, or a medium to small Arborviate. (all evergreens)

You can put certain small trees such as a Osmanthus, also known as Tea Olive, which is also an evergreen.

I hope this helps some and if you need some help designing your bed or other suggestions, please let us know. The best of luck to you and have a great day!
Kimberly
