Shade Over Drain Field

by Sheryl

I have a large back yard, approx 100x75, but have no shade and no plantings due to the drain field. There's a privacy fence down one side and an above-ground pool on the other. Any suggestions on what I can plant for shade? I'd also like to take up some of the grass and incorporate a natural bird/butterfly habitat but don't know where to start. I live in Zone 8.

Shade Over Drain Field

Hi Sheryl, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for your follow up question.

The plant specimens I gave for options earlier will work great in the shade. You have to be careful with larger trees that would do well in shade because of their deep root systems. You could plant large trees that are fast growers but the problem is their root systems.

Another problem some of your shade trees such as Maple varieties have large roots and deep, and they are deciduous. If you don't mind a deciduous tree in the cooler months, go with Maples, and Birch.

An option for you for getting shades is to do larger varieties of some of the plants I mentioned below. Do in mass plantings.

Thanks again Sheryl, and if you have any more questions feel free to ask. Have a great rest of the day.

Drain field

My question was "what can I plant "for shade" over a drain field?". It is full sun for most of the day and I live in Ga so it is very hot. I know that you aren't supposed to plant deep-rooted plants or trees over the drain field so what are my options? My yard needs some kind of shade.
Thanks!

Shade Garden Over Drain Field
by: Kimberly

Hi Sheryl, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on what to put in a shade garden. I moved your question to your own section so it would be easier for you to find.

Here are some suggestions of different plant specimens that may work for you.

1. Azelas
2. Rhododendrons
3. Pieris Japonica
4. Mahonia
5. Indian Hawthorn
6. Mountain Laurel in some climates in zone eight
7. Astible flowers
8. Lily - Of - Valley flowers
9. Hostas
10.Cameillas

These are just a few that come to mind. Many varieties of Daly Liles will work in shade. A variety of different colored flowers will attract butterflies in a shade garden.

Thanks again Sheryl, and if you need anymore suggestions, feel free to ask. Hope this helps and have a great day.
Kimberly
