I have had 2 of these bushes, this will be their 3 summer here and they haven't grown at all. The top of one died, so I cut it off last year, and it just stayed the same. So the other one wasn't growing either,so I cut the top of it off this year, and started putting Epsom salt on them, and WOW they have really taken off and grown almost double in size.
I have been given them a Tablespoon dissolved in water about every 4 to 5 days and they appear to really like it. They are looking great, have a bunch of new growth, and really happy.

Firepower Nandinas

Hi Pat, Kimberly here from landscape-solutions-for-you. Thank you for asking your question on your Firepower Nandina plants.

From what you have said, it sounds like you have taken good care of them over the two years. One question, were they all the same size when your husband bought them? When you buy bulk plants sometimes a few of them may be grown from germination or propagation at different times. Most growers will keep the same crop together when shipping to nurseries and garden centers. Sometimes they can get mixed up.

As far as your five that arern't as tall. Try loosening the soil and adding some organic mushroom compost to them. This is an organic fertilizer that will last up to one year.

If they look healthy I would recommend leaving them alone. The may just be smaller plant specimens. If you are concerned there might be something wrong with them, take a small sharp knife and scratch the surface of a branch on a couple of the smaller ones. See if it is green or brown. If it is green, it is healhty. If it is brown they may be in shock.

There is also growth stimulators you can buy for shrubs that will kick up their growth rate. Check at a local nursery to see what is available in your area. This may help your five Nandinas.

Another option if you want to experiment, which I love you to do, is to prune back one of your larger Nandinas to the size of your smaller ones. See what that one you pruned does next year. This may help you understand the growth pattern of the five that aren't as tall.
