terracing a sloping lot....how to?

I need help! My backyard is VERY sloped. The drainage is awful when it rains, and to make it worse--there is very little grass as we have just finished building a house. Now I need to come up with a solution for terracing that won't get washed away when it rains.

Please advise!

Terracing A Sloped Lot
by: Kimberly

Hi, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on a terracing a sloped lot. Congratulations on building your own home.

The first step you need to do is to divert the water away from your problem areas. This can be done a couple of ways. You can install a French Drain or you can dig a trench and put in solid corrugated pipes. I will link you to a page on the site to landscaping with corrugated pipes. This may help you get started. You can also connect drain boxes to the corrugated pipes, which will help with the flow of the unwanted water.

Once you have taken care of your drainage issues, you can decide if you want to terrace the slope, by actually building different levels in the ground. This can be tricky to get them leveled out. Another option is to prep the slope the best you can. If it is too steep to use a tiller, smooth and rake out. You can purchase some Jute, which is a commercial grade landscape fabric, made out of burlap. This helps hold materials into place on a bank or slope. You can consider planting evergreens on the slope. Stagger them and add series of three to five rocks throughout. This will help hold things into place. The jute is a wonderful product for your particular problem.

My crew and I have worked on many slopes, and if you take care of the water problem, consider terracing different layers, or use Jute and plant, you will have a nice looking slope area, and a good investment to your property.

I hope this has helped some and please continue to ask questions here on this issue if you need some more help. I wish you the best of luck and thanks again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Have a great day!
Kimberly
