too much rain has made an area in my yard a muddy puddle

by Dee
(Pompano Beach, FL)

How can I fill in the muddy area? Do I use sand first then dirt, which is heavier so the water will not pool there? I will eventually lay down river rocks and stepping stones but must first fill in this area. I am also worried about too much water sitting next the foundation of the house.
Please help!

Drainage
by: Morton

I have used a lot of "Nova Flow", flexiable ribbed plastic drainage pipe with small holes punched into it. This transfer water from one place to another but also collects it along its lenght, Laid in a trench and pipe covered with small shingle then soil up to ground level

So looking forward to Spring, its 43F with a southerly squall & snow on its way from Antartic

Too Much Rain Has Made An Area In Yard Muddy Puddle
by: Kimberly

Hi Dee, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your area in the yard that has puddles due to a large amount of rain.

A good quality dirt is the best solution right now. You live in southeastern Florida which is a sand base soil. You will need to put more weight into the soil by adding dirt.

It sounds like you have a good long range plan with adding stones or rocks to divert the water. It also sounds like you have some low lying areas in your yard. When you add the top soil, you will want to divert it away from the foundation. Put the dirt at a higher level near the foundation so the water will run away from the foundation, not to it.

Another option is depending on how big the area is you could install corrugated pipe in the low lying area. This will take care of the water flow problem. You would have to build a trench to fit the solid corrugated pipe in. This will take a little extra work, but could very well solve your problem with low lying areas.

Please let us know how you make out. Thanks again Dee for asking the question and feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day.
Kimberly
