Mesquite Tree
by: Kimberly

Hi Donna, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you very much for asking the question on your Mesquite tree and also pruning your rose and Jasmine shrubs.

The Mesquite has three different varieties. The Screwbean, Velvet, (which is the largest) and the Honey.

It sounds from your description that the Mesquite may be in shock. A way to check this is to take a small sharp knife and scratch the surface of a few branches. If they are green, the tree is still alive. If their brown, this is a definite sign of shock. The high winds will not help either with a new transplanted specimen. Consider loosening the dirt if the tree has green in it, and adding some mushroom compost. This is an organic fertilizer that will last up to one year. Make sure you stay on a good watering schedule. Another thought is to take a branch to a local nursery if available, and have them look at it.

As far as your rose and Jasmine, you can prune back once the flowering stage is all done. Prune the leggy branches off, but always trim at an angle.

I hope this helps some and let us know how you make out with your Mesquite tree. Thanks again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day!
Kimberly
