trees that grow in a slender, column shape

(anaheim ca)

I would like to know what types of trees grow in a shape similar to the Italian Cypress. I've read that the Italian Cypress grows to about 30 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide. I would like something that is about 1/2 to 1/3 that size. I guess I could start cutting them off once they hit 10 feet tall but I would prefer some other alternative.

Jennifer- thank you for the recomendation for the Japanese Holly "Sky Pencil". I almost got stuck with a pine looking tree which does not belong in So. Cal. with Palm trees! :)

Slender trees

Hi, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on alternatives for an Italian Cypress. You are right when you said you can control this specimen by topping it off peridically.

There are a couple other plant specimens that come to mind. These too may have to be pruned a little or topped, but might be a good alternative for you.

1. Black Dragon Cryptomeria - nice shape but will need to be topped.

2. Steeds Holly - smaller

3. Curly Leaf Ligustrum - smaller

4. Carolina Sapphire - taller tree - needs topping, but great alternative.

5. Emerald Green Arborvitae - smaller variety - fast grower, compact shape and easy to maintain.

There are other specimens that can be shaped into a cone. If you would like some more suggestions, please let us know. If anyone else has some thoughts, feel free to share. Thanks again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Have a great day!
Kimberly
