trimming mature magnolia

The water company plans to cut back my magnolia when laying a sewer line. Should they cut the lower branches at the trunk or a few feet out from the trunk? Will the branches grow again?

Hi, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. I have been out of town for the last two weeks and just returned. I am sorry it took so long to answer your question. Thank you for asking the question on your Magnolia tree.

Magnolia trees should be pruned in the winter months and only sections at a time. The company should prune close to the trunk and never prune branches that are close together.

The main goal is not to allow too much sap to escape. If the company does a small pruning job at first your tree should be fine.

I hope this helps and thanks again for asking the question. Once again, I am sorry I wasn't available to answer your question right away. Let us know how your Magnolia tree progresses after the pruning. Look forward to hearing about your tree. Have a great day.
Kimberly
