trimming pomegranate plant

Had info on it but lost it. It said something about trimming back old branches, and leaving certain ones. Also when do they flower and bare fruit? I live in zone 7....

Trimming Pomegranate Plant
by: Kimberly

Hi Marvin, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your Pomegranate tree.

You live in zone seven, which is my climate zone where I live in South Carolina.

I have planted Pomegranate for clients and also have one myself.

Your Pomegranate should have bloomed this summer and also should have some fruit on the tree now. Usually in September or early October when the fruit turns ripe, you can pick the fruit.

As far as pruning your Pomegranate, don't prune while the tree is in bloom or when bearing fruit. Wait until the tree has all blooms and fruit gone. Yes, you can trim off the dead branches and prune back. Always make sure you prune at an angle so you won't damage the branches or tree.

Pomegranate in our zone can be tricky, as sometimes they won't bloom every year. It will depend on weather, a watering schedule and location. Pomegranates are sub-tropical to tropical trees, but can survive in our zone.

I hope this helps some and I will give you a link to the Pomegranate page on this site. Best of luck to you with your Pomegranate. The seeds are very nutritional for you. Hope you are having a great weekend.
Kimberly
