Varigated evergreen

Is there anything you can add to the soil to encourage a plant to stay variegated or get more variegated? My variegated Arborvitae looks almost all green but it was nicely variegated when I first planted it.

Variegated Arborvitae
by: Kimberly

Hi Janet, Kimberly here from landscape-solutions-for-you. Thank you for asking the question on your variegated Arborvitae.

Many Arborvitaes and Cypress family members will loose some of the variegated color throughout the colder months. I am not sure of your geographic location, but if you have had a cold winter, this may be the reason your Arborvitae doesn't have the sharp color right now. I have found from my experience that most Arborivates that loose their tone, will revive themselves once the ground and air temperature gets warmer.

As far as promoting color and growth, I am not sure how established your specimen is, but if possilbe, loosen the dirt around the plant and add some organic mushroom compost. The mushroom compost is a great organic fertilizer that will last up to one year. This should help promote color and growth. You can use other types of fertilizer, but the organic mushroom compost works well. Doesn't smell great, but your Arborvitae will love it!

Thanks again for asking your question here. Good luck with your Arborvitae and let us know how you make out. Feel free to ask a question anytime. Have a great day.
Kimberly
