weeping cherry suddenly dying...

We planted a weeping cherry tree in our garden last summer, this year the tree came back beautifully, bloomed, and was healthy...until this week...

We were gone on vacation for a week, when we left the tree was fine and now it looks almost completely dead. almost all the leaves are brown except for some at the ends of the branches.

What is happening to our tree? can we save it? Was it lack of water or something else?

the scratch test turned out brown... i loosened the soil but we couldnt find any mushroom compost so i substituted peat moss because our soil is basicly clay and i added some organic plant food...haven't really seen much improvement though...

Weeping Cherry Tree Suddenly Dying
by: Kimberly

Hi, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your Weeping Cherry Tree.

I am not sure where you are located, but it you have had some hot weather, and gone on vacation for a week, the tree could be in stress due to lack of water. When the temperatures get hot, fairly new trees and shrubs will need a little extra water.

Go ahead and do the scratch test. Take a small sharp knife and scratch the surface of a branch. If it is green, it still is alive. If it is brown, the tree is definitely in stress.

I would recommend either way to loosen the dirt and add some organic mushroom compost to the soil. This is an organic fertilizer that will last up to one year. Get on a good watering schedule and see how the Weeping Cherry does in the next couple of weeks. Let us know how the tree is doing. Best of luck.

Thanks again for asking the question and feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day.
Kimberly
