Weeping cherry trees keep dying.

by Kylie
(Melbourne)

We have had two weeping cherry trees planted into our front garden and both have died. Do you have any information on how big the root base should be when planting? We believe the ground below is quite rocky and could have some granite. Could this be the problem, and would it mean no weeping cherry trees would grow in these conditions? We were thinking of digging a half wine barrel into the ground and putting the tree into this, hoping to eliminate any heat that could be causing them to die. Could this work?
Regards
Kylie

Dealing With Dead Weeping Cherry Trees
by: Kimberly

HI Kylie:
This is Kimberly from Landscape-Solutions For You. Weeping Cherry Trees are fast growers and the main aspect of the roots systems is not to plant them too close to a foundation or sidewalk. In my zone seven, we are clay base and also rock below the surface. There are a couple of things you can do. You can bring in top soil and raise the area to plant your trees. A good blend is black dirt, sand and saw dust, if this is available to you. Adding some organic mushroom compost will help also.

You don't want to put the ball of the tree in a wine barrel. The roots need to be established in the ground. The standard for planting a ball and burlap is three times the size of the root ball. I usually do a little less and have had no problem. The one goal is not to let air pockets in when covering the hole. If you would like some more information, please let me know and I would be happy to try and give you some more help. Good luck to you and it is possible to grow your Weeping Cherry trees in your soil conditions. Have a great day!
