Weigela wine and rose

by Nicole
(Omaha, ne)

We recently had weigela wine and rose bushes planted in our yard. The bushes are dying and leaves are becoming dry and brown at the bottom . We have recently had a very hot streak of weather. Is there anything we can do to help revive the bushes?

Weigela Wine and Rose Plants
by: Kimberly

Hi Nicole, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your Weigela Wine and Rose bushes.

This sounds like the a classic case of new shrubs going into shock. Shock can be a common problem especially in the first year or two of planting.

The excess heat doesn't help in the establishment of the root system.

I would recommend the scratch test to see the condition of the branches, which is a good indicator of the health of the plants.

Take a sharp knife and scratch the surface of a few branches. If they are green, the plants are still alive. If they are brown, the shrubs are in shock.

Check for any fungus on the top and bottom parts of the leaves, and also for possible insects. If there isn't any of these, the shrubs could be in shock due to lack of water.

You could loosen the dirt around each shrub and add some organic mushroom compost. This is a great fertilizer that will last up to one year.

Make sure you get on a extra special watering schedule. Water early in the morning if possible, or at dusk. Take a hose and slow drip around each plant so the roots get watered thouroughly. Start out with three times a week. In the early morning hours, besides slow drip watering, go ahead and mist the branches. Hopefully you will see life come back into the Weigela vine and rose bushes.

Mulch or pine straw will work well to retain the water into the soil.

Good luck and thanks again Nicole for asking the question. Let us know how you make out.
Kimberly
