What is the reason for getting taseless small fruits from Pear tree?

by Jehane
(Seattle, WA)

Our Pear tree produces fruits in small size and without any taste. It looks young, healthy and 10 feet tall. It came with the house we bought, so we didn't know the type and age of the tree. Now in August it started growing branches on top. I live in Seattle.
1.What should we do to get tasty pear fruits in future?
2.Can I pluck all the fruits now? (Don't know what to do with them)
3.Can I prune the tree now? at what level?

Please advise. Thanks,

Tasteless Fruit From Pear Tree
by: Kimberly

Hi Jehane, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your pear tree.

There are many different varieties of fruit Pear trees. Your state of Washington is one of the biggest producers of pear trees.

The first step I would recommend is to identify what type of pear tree you have. You can do this by bringing a pear to a local nursery or garden center. You could also trim off a small branch with its leaves to get the identity.

Pear trees don't get fruit at the end of the branches like some other fruit trees. The fruit grow on spurs between the branches. When a pear tree is young, it should be pruned regularly. Once it matures, you can prune once a year.

Pears also don't ripen on the trees. They need to be harvested. They will ripen at room temperature.

I would first get the identity of what type of pear tree you have and then we can go from there.
You are fortunate to be living in a geographic location that has an excellent climate for growing pears.

Let us know what type of pear tree you have, and how much fruit you are seeing on the tree. Thanks again Jehane for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Ask anytime and look forward to hearing from you. Have a great day!
Kimberly
