What to plant with Arborvitae

by Sarah
(Alexandria, VA)

Hi! I just had 6 Green Giant Emerald Arborvitae planted in front of my fence in the backyard for privacy. I would like to create a border and plant some shrubs or plants in front of these trees. The area gets full sun. I live in Virginia in zone 7. Any ideas would be appreciated!!

Wow Kimberly, thank you so much for the suggestions. I love the lemon thread cypress and lirope is always reliable and attractive. I may have to look up some of the others you mentioned. I will let you know what I decide on!

What To Platn With Arborvitae
by: Kimberly

Hi Sarah, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on what to plant with your Arborvitaes.

Living in zone seven you have a wide variety of choices that will work. You have created a great backdrop with the Arborviates. Here are some suggestions that will give you year around color.

1. Lemon Thread Cypress or Mop Cypress. The Mop is smaller and both are yellow and green variegated leaves.

2. Loropetalum - different varieties and Chinese Pizazz is smaller version. Purple and green leaves with pink flowers.

3. Indian Hawthorn - flowers in springtime.

4. Sea Green Juniper - bright evergreen leaves. You can use differernt Junipers.

5. Sky Pencils or Steeds Holly

6. Standing Yew

You can mingle in some deciduous shrubs such as Abeilia and Spirea. These are just a few.

Your main goal is to plant along your fence from the tallest and work your way down to smaller plants.

Border with Liriope or perennial flowers. You have many different plant specimens as options.

If you haven't had a chance, check out the gallery of plants section and the variety of more plants section here at landscape solutions for you. You will see plant descriptions and zones.

If you need more selections or advice on how to position your plants, let us know.

Thanks again Sarah for asking the question. Feel free to ask anytime. Let us know what you decide. Sounds like you are going to have a beautiful landscape by your fence. The Emerald Green is a wonderful specimen by a fence. Have a great day.
