White River Birch Tree

First of all thank you all for your prompt assistance with my Garden Questions.

I have had a beautiful White River Birch tree for two years. The shape is a little lopsided at the present time. Can you tell me what time of the year is the best to trim this tree and where on the Branch should it be cut?

Thank You
Patricia S. Langlois

Pruning White River Birch
by: Kimberly

Hi Patrica, Kimberly here at landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your White River Birch.

The River Birch specimen is tricky in pruning due to the natural sap that emerges in the springtime. Depending on your climate location, I would recommend pruning some now or the better time is late winter or very early spring before any new growth or sap. I would also recommend if you prune now or in winter, apply dormant oil to the branches you pruned. This will help with any diseases or pests in the upcoming months. Dormant oil should be applied once a year for your White River Birch protection.

If there are any dead branches, go ahead and prune them now. Always prune at an angle and above the notch of a branch. This will ensure healthy and proper growth for the future.

I hope this has helped you and thank you again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Feel free to ask anytime and have a great evening.
Kimberly
